Tonight the chilly weather in Sydney was a bit like that in Hobart. So it was a perfect night to launch MOFO 2012.
A couple of months ago I visited MONA for the first time. I spent about four hours in the gallery and needed at least another four to see the whole gallery. I am definitely hooked on what this wonderful gallery has to offer.
MONA FOMA (or MOFO) is the music and arts festival that was launched in January this year to coincide with the opening of the new gallery. So having been so captivated by the gallery I’m definitely booking in a trip to Hobart in January next year to enjoy the festival (and to get back to the gallery).
The launch, under the Sydney Harbour Bridge, was as out there as the festival promises to be.
The crowd which consisted mostly of music and arts types (performers and media) were treated to a band on the back of a truck pumpin out AC/DC. OK it was an all-girl band and they were very punk.
And it is definitely ‘A long way to the top’ when you want to rock and roll but that does get some attention.
So after women, AC/DC, bagpipes, and a truck, what is in store for 2012? Well this is what the media release is promising.
Brian Ritchie, MOFO’s curator, has once again gathered the noble troubadours of the weird, world famous and never-heard-of-before music, dance, theatre, visual art and sound.
Here are the 2012 MOFO Festival headliners
PJ Harvey (UK). Ryoji Ikeda (Japan) pure math, visuals and music. Pierre Henry (France), at 84 years he is arriving virtually; after all he is the pioneer of ‘musique concrete’. Dresden Dolls (USA) that duo with the Brechtian punk cabaret attitude. Aminiia (Iceland) music minimalists. BalletLab, Melbourne’s confrontational dance troupe. IHOS (Aus) multicultural, multilingual original music-theatre and opera. Hanggai (Mongolia + China) who were at Sydney festival this year. tUnE-yArDs (USA) the marriage of coarse folk and pop sensibility. The Dad Horse Experience (Germany), gospel-preaching-banjo-plucking one-man-band.
And the relevance of the AC/DC launch – well at MONA from Jan 14th Sydney artist Nell reveals her homage to AC/DC. Let There Be Robe is a spectacular rock-and-roll robe created with their T shirts collected from across the globe.
